Here are some ideas that will help you layout your room and give it a fresh new look.
Make it Cozy
Think about what makes the rooms at your favorite hotel feel so nice: Is it the pristine all-white bedding? The ultra-thick drapes? Whether it’s a gracious master or a vintage nook, your bedroom at home can feel just as comfortable when you fill it with soft, pleasing textiles. An upholstered accent chair in one corner is perfect for curling up with a book or chatting on the phone, and an upholstered bench or loveseat placed at the end of the bed creates an easy landing spot for slipping on your shoes, packing your weekend bag or setting aside decorative pillows for the night. If your room has hard floors, add a large area rug that’s situated partially beneath the bed so your feet find a plush surface in the morning (we like durable wool rugs with a pad underneath for extra cushioning in the bedroom). Consider layering curtains—lined cotton panels for the top layer and sheer linen or silk underneath—so you can have darkness and privacy at night but allow plenty of natural light to filter in during the day.
Make it Neat
It’s hard to de-stress in a cluttered environment, so don’t overcrowd your bedroom with furniture. Keep only the pieces you really love and those that serve a true purpose. Also, while a few decorative pillows can add polish to the look of the room, don’t flood your bed with them or you’ll spend too much time taking them off and putting them back on when you make your bed in the morning—and yes, mom was right, the neatness of a nicely made bed will make you feel more relaxed
Make it Inviting
The quickest and easiest way to update your bedroom is to replace your bedding—maybe you’re tired of that floral duvet cover and are ready to freshen up your room’s look with a cleaner, more subtle print. Avoid empty walls and instead give the space a familiar, lived-in feel by hanging calming artwork and framed family photos.. Use bedside lamps with dimmers or 3-way switches so you can keep things soothingly dim when you want, and consider using a chandelier in the middle of the room for a touch of formal glamour. One of our favorite bedroom decor ideas is to use a coordinating furniture collection to unify the look of the room--a bed, dresser and nightstands that match--then layer in contrasting upholstered pieces, textured rugs and accent pillows to soften the effect. Finally, keep fresh flowers on your nightstand or dresser—they’ll instantly put you in a happier mood.
Keep the Bedroom Simple
A bedroom should look cozy and simple, sophisticated, and elegant, regardless of what style of decorating you choose. For ease of movement, leave a minimum of three feet between the bed and side walls or large pieces of furniture and at least two feet between the bed and low furniture like tables and dressers. If you have to walk around the bed to get from the closet to the bathroom, think of how you can move the bed.
Furnish your bedroom with only what you need. A bed, a bedside table or two, a dresser, and chair are necessities. Anything else is clutter. If you have room, place a chest of drawers in the closet.
Accessories should be kept to a minimum. Choose a beautiful piece of artwork, arrange some family photos, add flowers and candles, and leave it alone
Color
The way I see it, when it comes to decorating a bedroom, you could either play it safe and go with neutrals or take a risk with bold color. If you’re going for an eclectic or punchy look and you know that you love color, then you could decide to commit to something dramatic and center your entire room around it. But I just couldn’t make that kind of commitment because I know myself well and I change my mind way too often!
White or light neutral colored walls are often a really good idea if you change your mind quite a bit and you can bring color into your room other ways via bed covers, curtains and furniture.
Most paint can be bought in sample sizes so you can test the colors out on part of your wall - a good idea if you’re planning to paint the room a very bright or very dark color!
Tips
Dark colors make a room feel small and light colors make a room feel bigger.
Likewise, painting the ceiling the same color as the walls will make the room feel smaller.
Check out a color wheel for inspiration. Colors on the opposite ends of the wheel go together well and better than you may think - like yellow and lilac!
You’ll need different paint for painting plaster walls and for painting wood you might want to look into gloss.
You can get a special kind of tape for use around the skirting boards or window sills while you paint too, visit your local hardware store or home retailers.
Make sure you've got permission! If you're living with your parents or guardians, make sure they're okay with you turning your room into a canvas.
Equally, depending on the type of housing you stay in, check what you're allowed to do with the landlord or housing association.
If you don't fancy painting the entire room but have pretty boring walls, why not try out only painting one main wall? You can also experiment with using wallpaper to really bring things to life.
You can also try a crinkled wall effect. Once you’ve painted a wall, press sheets of plastic wrap on the wet paint and then pull it off. You should be left with a kind of ‘crinkled’ look in your paint. This might take some practice to get just right, so be patient!
Stencils can be a really easy way to spice up your room. You can buy them at paint stores or craft shops, or you can make your own. You can apply the paint with a sponge for a more ‘spray-painted’ look, or paint it on for smooth, sharp edges.
Lighting
You’d be amazed what a difference lighting can make to the feel of a room! If you’re not allowed to change your lights, ask about getting a couple of lamps to change the atmosphere.
You can get colored lightbulbs to make your room feel more mellow or just different. A string of fairy lights strung around the wall can be a real feature of your room too.
Candles are also great for creating a more homey feel - just remember to always put them out after you're done.
Layering
If you’ve got room, you might want to pick up a few bits of second-hand furniture to fill out your room. They might be cheap, but sometimes they look it too! Don’t let that put you off, though. Covering furniture can be really easy.
Get a big piece of fabric or an old sheet, or buy one in the sales, and cover a couch or chair with it. If you want, you can secure it in place with some tacks or a staple gun. Toss a blanket over a couch and add a few cushions to turn a tired old sofa into something smart and stylish. You can even make your own cushions – it’s dead easy with practice!
Some things you might not be able to fix cheaply, like carpets or furniture, but with some time and effort there are ways of concealing those things. You can get lots of books on decorating and ideas from the internet, so if you’re stuck for ideas, go have a look or ask a friend for help. Most of all, have fun making your room somewhere you'd want to spend all of your spare time!
