Use the space under your bed wisely.PNG

Use the space under your bed wisely

Under the bed storage is great because it is not visible, but still very easily accessible. You can choose to store just a few items under there - I recommend things like gift wrap, or extra linens in an adult bedroom, and books in a children's bedroom - or you could be strategic and transfer the content of your dresser into rolling bin under the bed to free up space in your bedroom. The things you can store under your bed are endless and only as vast as your imagination dares to dream.

Artwork on the walls!

Especially if you have a small bedroom, put your artwork on the wall and not on your dresser, nightstand, or vanity. Keep these spaces clear and your bedroom will have a more streamlined look. It will also give your home a modern contemporary look without much extra effort. Keeping artwork on the walls also helps to reinvigorate a room. Try it and see how quickly you are inspired to create, design, and to keep a clean space.

Break the room down by major pieces of furniture and organize

Organize the closet, under the bed (remember: always organize and declutter storage space first), dresser drawers, tops of dressers, night table drawers, tops of night tables, armoires, wardrobes, bookcases, etc.

Get your closet under control

Even if your bedroom is spotless, if your closet is spirally out of control, it will disrupt the calm, serene state of the bedroom. If it no longer fits it is time to donate. If you haven’t worn it in more than a two full moons, it is time to retire those pieces of clothing.

Consider a blanket rack.PNG

Consider a blanket rack

If you have a ton of throws and quilts that you use regularly, and you have the floor space, consider a pretty blanket rack. This will make making the bed, and getting the bed ready at night ("turn down") easier. You won't be tempted to just throw everything on the floor.

Baskets for pillows

Same goes for throw pillows. While men never do this, women--myself included--like to make the bed as comfortable as possible by employing as many throw pillows as possible. Use baskets to contain these while you're using the bed, stripping the bed and doing the wash.

Maintain a functional but clutter-free night table.PNG

Maintain a functional but clutter-free night table

Rather than import a desk, choose a night table that suits your needs while taking up as little space as possible. A small dresser where you can store some clothing is a great space-saving trick that many professional organizers employ with clients who are living in tight quarters. if you don't have the room for a small dresser, try a slim night table with lots of drawers.

Make sure you have a hamper in your bedroom.PNG

Make sure you have a hamper in your bedroom

Either in the closet, next to the closet, or near the closet, a hamper will help clothes to stay in the closet and not spill out all over your bedroom.

You can choose one whose look fits your decor, or just use a basic hamper.

Finally, a garbage pail or trash bin.PNG

Finally, a garbage pail or trash bin

Again, locate a small attractive garbage pail to keep in the bedroom. Look specifically for a pail because a big bin won't work, but you do need a spot to throw tissues, scraps of paper and all the other small pieces of trash that make their way into your bedroom.

The following simple tasks take only a few minutes each. Go ahead and spread them out over an entire month – or cross off the entire list in a day. The choice is yours, but either way, you are sure to end up with a bedroom that looks tidier than before you started.

  • Make your bed. It’s the quickest, easiest way to immediately improve the look of your entire bedroom. Not only that, but those few morning minutes have a big positive impact on the rest of your day.

  • Toss dirty clothes into the hamper. If it's in your bedroom closet, rather than the laundry room, you are likelier to make use of it.

  • Hang up clean clothes, or put them away in the appropriate drawer.

  • Replace books on the shelves, and toss read magazines.

  • Go through paper piles, sorting papers into trash, file, handle ASAP. Better yet, keep your work papers in another part of the house.

  • Return any dishes or glasses to the kitchen.

  • Empty the wastebasket.

  • Vacuum underneath the bed.

  • Vacuum the rest of the floors.

  • Spot clean any stains on the carpets or rugs with commercial stain remover or vinegar diluted 1:3 with water.

  • Use a Magic Eraser or damp rag to wipe down all the baseboards. You'll be amazed at what a difference it makes.

  • Dab away any spots or scuffs on the walls.

  • Clean your bedroom door, paying special attention to the area around the handle, and near the floor.

  • Clean the closet doors.

  • Wipe your bedroom mirrors with commercial or homemade glass cleaner.

  • Use disinfecting wipes to clean your doorknobs and light switches.

  • Dust the light bulbs and lampshades.

  • Use a microfiber cloth to dust the furniture.

  • Set houseplants in the kitchen sink, and shower them down to remove dust from the leaves.

  • Dust knickknacks. If your room has an excessive collection, box some up for a charity donation or garage sale.

  • Arrange your dresser top and nightstand. Keep only the necessities on display, along with one or two photos or other collectibles.

  • Use your broom or mop to wipe away any cobwebs hiding in the ceiling corners.

  • Sort through your sock drawer. Toss any socks with holes, saggy elastic, or stains. Put unmated socks into your rag basket, or throw them away.

  • Spiff up your underwear drawer. Time to get rid of those old, stained, baggy panties. When you finish this entire list, treat yourself to some new, pretty undergarments. You deserve it!

  • Give a quick look through your tee shirts. If any are hopelessly stained, ripped or ill-fitting, put them in your rag basket.

  • Open your closet. Toss any shoes that are worn out, uncomfortable, stained beyond repair, or hopelessly out of fashion.

  • Place your remaining shoes in neat pairs, whether on a shoe rack, in shoeboxes, or just neatly arranged on the floor of your closet.

  • Organize your hanging clothing by type. Dress pants, dress shirts, casual pants, casual shirts, jackets, coats, etc.

  • Remove any clothing that you know doesn’t fit, is stained, or is uncomfortable. Donate good items to charity, and throw the rest away.

  • Fold sweaters and heavier clothing items and stack them on the closet shelf. This prevents shoulder sag.

  • Straighten out your jewelry box. Untangle necklaces and bracelets, put earrings with their partners and put rings together.

Whether you worked your way through the entire list or only choose one or two small tasks to complete, you’ve made your room cleaner and better organized.
